Earning high school scholarships can be more about creativity and legwork than it is about getting good grades. Here are a few with upcoming deadlines that you should be checking out:
Do Something.org Love Letters for Senior Citizens
Do Something.org has teamed up with Meals on Wheels to be sure that lonely senior citizens receive a personalized Valentine’s Card with their meal deliveries this year. To encourage the creation of these cards, they are offering a chance at a $4000 scholarship. Students younger than age 26 are asked to create a personal card, upload a photo to Do Something.org and then deliver their card to the local Meals on Wheels chapter. You may create and upload more than one card – additional creations earn additional chances to win a scholarship. Check out their website to see the guidelines as well as to get some ideas. You’ll also find a link to help you locate your local Meals on Wheels chapter. Even if you don’t win a scholarship – this is a great event to participate in! The deadline for submission is February 15, 2014
The Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship
This essay based scholarship has two awards of $5000 each. Vegetarian students who will be graduating high school in spring 2014 are asked to submit an essay telling about their life as a vegetarian and how they have helped promote the vegetarian diet and lifestyle in their community. While there is no word count given, the website lists 16 points that are to be covered in the essay. Applicants will be judged on having shown compassion, courage and a strong commitment to promoting a vegetarian diet/lifestyle. This scholarship’s deadline is February 20, 2014.
The Jimmy Rane Foundation Scholarship
This foundation, funded by an annual golf tournament to raise scholarship funds, offers an award of up to $5000 for graduating high school seniors and college students with a financial need. Students must exhibit academic excellence, leadership skills and community involvement. High school seniors need to have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Visit the website above to set up an account and obtain a list of required documentation. This scholarship has a deadline of February 12, 2014.
