JFK Profile in Courage Essay Contest

This essay contest is open to high school students in grades nine through twelve.  With a deadline of January 6, 2014, students are asked to describe an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official that occurred during or after 1956 – the publication date of Profiles in Courage.  The official may have addressed an issue at the local, state or national level.   (You cannot use John F., Robert F. or Edward M. Kennedy are subjects.)  The essay can be no more than 1000 words and must have a minimum of five sources.  Students are asked to have a nominating teacher review their work – home schooled students may use their parents as a nominating teacher.  There are three levels of winners:  (1) First place is awarded a $10,000 prize and is invited to accept the award in May at the Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. (2) Second place receives $1000 and (3) up to five finalists each receive $500.

The 7th Annual Create-A-Greeting Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest

High school and college students, ages 14 and older are asked to create a Christmas, holiday, birthday or all-occasion greeting card and submit their design by January 15, 2014.  Students are only allowed to submit one design and they will be judged on several criteria, including aesthetic appeal, creativity and originality and appropriateness for use as a greeting card.  The applicant with the winning entry will receive a cash scholarship of $10,000.  There are very specific guidelines for greeting card submissions, so be sure to read all the rules before submitting your entry.

Ronald McDonald House Charities

Local Ronald McDonald House Charities offer a minimum $1,000 scholarship for graduating high school seniors that demonstrate a financial need and have been involved in their community.  You will also be asked to submit an essay and have a minimum GPA of 2.7.  There are four different scholarships available – three of which are based on a student’s heritage.  Not all Ronald McDonald chapters offer each scholarship so you will need to follow the links, set up an account and determine which ones may be available in your area.  The deadline for application is January 21, 2014.

~to your success,

Joanne
